Crispy on the decks with plenty of FX

Hi pals hope you’re all doing well

I’ve been enjoying DJing with the Hit Squad recently and so got myself a DJ controller to improve my mixing. I’ve never owned one of these before and have always been intimidated by anything live engineering/mixing, so it’s been good to get acquainted with that and has definitely unlocked some stuff for me musically

I realised quite early on how beneficial it would be to also incorporate it into my live show for solo stuff, as I have been using backing tracks on/off my last couple of gigs. I also have some songs that stylistically fit that theme of dance music, using loops, emphasising the lo-fi elements etc

So I tried it last night at The Bunker just to see if I could do it and if I enjoyed that type of setup - just me, the mic and my decks. I actually really loved it!

Wasn’t a challenge technically, with just one input for engineer Phil Jax, and I loved the monitoring situation - having my headphones blasting so I knew where I was in the track. I also got the most out of the tracks using the decks, introducing effects for different parts of the tunes and tweaking frequencies when there were ambient parts

So that has actually sent me in a completely different direction because I really enjoyed it and felt quite comfortable even though I’d never done it before. It was interesting

I think to stand there and play guitar and sing your tunes you really have to be something interesting, because I have seen it literally billions of times. While I do think my tunes are good, I’m not interesting enough on guitar for it to be captivating - I’m good enough to play the tune, to express the song, but not carry the tune on guitar. Using the decks is definitely more interesting because it interests me right now

I’m really looking forward to doing more gigs now. Always indulge your interests and don’t be scared to try new things!

See you round the twist
